Monday, May 18, 2009- We
have a winner!

A String of Firsts
In the first annual
Border Run, Art and Patti
Diener first boat,
First Light, , were
taking part in their
first race on the boat.
To their delight they came
in first in their
class and upon their win,
the Diener's said,
"We had First rate
Crew and Co-skipper, Jim and
Cynthia Treydte...I want to
be the First to say
thanks to them."
After the race was over, the
Border Run organizers
decided that they would try
and be the first race
to sign up one hundred boats
in the first two
weeks after the race and the
first boat to sign up
for the 2010 race was
First Light.
When Jenny the Sea Tow girl
reached her sexy little paws
into the sail bag, the
first name she pulled
out was First Light -
the first entry for
2010.
"First of all, I'd
like to be the first
to congratulate the Dieners,"
said Border Run organizer
Bob Long. "I think they are
first and foremost
first rate sailors and
first rate
competitors."
While our first
contest is in the books, XS
Racing/Border Run plans to
continue greasing the wheels
with other fun contests to
inspire early entries. Join
today and be entered into
the next contest. And don't
worry - if you don't win
one contest you will be
automatically entered into
the following one. A
boatload of early entries
will make this race bigger
and better than anything the
West Coast has ever seen. Be
a part!

Tuesday, April 28 - 2009 -
XS Racing wants to thank all
the sailors who sailed in
the 2009 Border Run and who
made the inaugural race a
huge success. The event was
created in mid January and
three months later we had
112 boats signed up - making
for one of the most highly
attended inaugural sailing
events in West Coast racing
history. With your
participation, we look to
make the 2010 Border Run
bigger and better. We've got
tons of great ideas, many
put forth by TBR racers,
that we think will establish
this event as the most
progressive, interesting and
fun contest on the West
Coast racing calendar.
After staging this event and
seeing the reaction, we
began considering all we've
learned and are very much
looking forward to
introducing some new cool
ideas for the next one. We
also feel that it's
realistic to attract 300-500
boats for the sophomore Run
- that's why we are asking
sailors to enter TODAY for
the 2010 Border Run. From
the diehard to the beginner
and the ever present "used
to race" racer - The Border
Run is a cool event for all
skill levels.
But we want to get a head of
steam...there's no doubt
that early entries spawn
great events so we're gonna
sweeten the pot. To
encourage sailors to sign up
before May 15th we are
having a drawing for a new
handheld Garmin GPS and free
entry - enter and don't pay
until March 1st 2010.
On May 18th, 2009, we will
put all entries into a
sail-bag and one of the
gorgeous Sea Tow girls will
pick a winner. The lucky
sailor's name will be posted
on both sites.

Newport
Beach, CA –
Sea Scouts take on The Border Run with
"DARE"

“Young co-ed Sea Scouts from the Newport
Sea Base are ready to take on the
inaugural
Border Run
Race, a new yacht race across the
Mexican border that starts next month.
These Sea Scouts, dubbed “the Renegades”
along with adult leaders hope to take a
trophy in the high powered PHRF Class
against some of the best adult sailors
around!”
Sea scouts from Sea Scout Ship 90 in
Newport Beach will be racing their fast
program sailing vessel “Dare” a 60 foot
ultralight racing yacht in the “Border
Run.”
“We’ve been lucky enough to share
the use of a beautiful 60’ racer/cruiser
ultralight as our program vessel”, Sea
Scout Skipper Tim Martin says. She is
the fastest Sea Scout sailing vessel in
the nation - period! We share her use
from a wonderful Newport Beach family
who believe in our mission of building a
big boat Sea Scout program in the area.
We have learned a lot from sailing her.
Now these kids are eager to race against
some of the very best in this exciting
race across the border.
The Border Run Race was conceived
by race organizers XS Racing to provide
a dramatic international yacht race
utilizing the best wind between the U.S
and Mexico. The Renegades will race the
long course, which starts in Newport
Beach, crossing over the border into
Mexico, navigating between the north and
south Coronado Islands and finishing in
San Diego.
“If we do well we will continue
to build interest in sailing to more
young people,” Martin says.
Sea Scout Ship 90 was started
approximately four years ago to provide
an exciting sailing program around a big
boat. “We have some very experienced
sailing coaches from the marine industry
and other committed adult leaders
helping these kids learn everything
about Big Boat sailing,” Martin says.
The Renegades are also highly decorated
in scouting. “One of our sea scouts just
completed the triple crown in Scouting,
earning his Quartermaster Award, Eagle
Scout Award and his Venturing Silver
Award, the top medals one can get in
scouting. He then topped it off by
meeting President Obama two weeks in the
Oval Office!” “Our Sea scouts are going
somewhere sailing wise while achieving
very high goals!”
“We are trying to turn our young
boys and girls into great sailing
yachtsmen and future leaders,” Martin
says. “Hopefully, experiences like this
exciting race will plant a seed our new
kids and also other youth in the area to
really get into sailing and challenging
themselves personally.”

program please please contact

Farr 40’s
Join the Border Run Fleet!

Just before the early entry
deadline closed the West Coast Farr 40
one design fleet entered four of their
fastest Farr 40’s to compete in the
inaugural 2009 Border Run. Included in
the Farr fleet is current West Coast
Farr 40 champion David Voss’s Team
Piranha. Taking on Team Piranha are
Farr 40 teams Ohana, Radical Departure 3
and Far Niente.
“We are very excited to have this fleet
of the highly competitive and still
growing Farr 40 class on the race
course” says PR Director Josh Richards.
“ “We think they will have fun on our
long course sailing between the Coronado
Islands and finishing in San Diego. The
course is challenging, tactical and
different. In addition, the fleet will
be warmed up and ready to go for the
following weekends Leukemia Yachting Cup
at SDYC.”
Event organizer, Randy Reynolds adds:
“We encourage one design and class
fleets to get as many of their
sisterships out on the water. Not only
will the Farr 40 fleet be racing for a
PHRF trophy they will also be racing for
a one design trophy as well. In The
Border Run, if two of the same class of
boat, regardless of rating, hits the
starting line they will be racing in
fleet AND will be racing for a ‘match
racing’ trophy.. With three boats of
the same class then the ‘Match Racing’
trophy is converted to a ‘One Design’
trophy.” “It is always much more fun to
race against same class boats instead of
ratings. Regardless of how good any
rating system they can be ‘condition
driven’. Sailors racing with the same
hull and rig design always makes for
better racing”.
With entries already approaching 50
boats in early March, the event is
already a success. “Our goal was 50 to
100 boats for this event....however with
the incredible acceptance of the Border
Run we have revised our 100 boat goal.
We are reaching out to sailors that
“used to” race the Ensenada Race but
abandoned the race years ago due to the
logistics of the race. There are more
‘use to be’ racers out there than
current racers. We hope to bring them
back out on the water. Our new goal
exceeds 100 boats and we are now
preparing for a huge fleet says PR
Director Josh Richards.
“We are changing our strategy and are
now preparing for a much larger fleet.
We will be ready!” says Hans Witten,
PRO and Race Director. “This event is
going to be fun!”
Event organizers encourage sailors not
to delay any longer to enter...only 6
weeks before the race. Enter now and
plan early to have a great time and to
support the San Diego, USA economy. The
Send-off party at the Balboa Inn
includes a live band and is located only
steps away from the beach or bay
including the popular Fun Zone in
Newport Beach. After finishing the race
in San Diego the After-party will be at
the prestigious San Diego Yacht Club
which will include the Loma tones live
band (www.lomatones.com) , food and
drink as well as a shuttle service to
Shelter Island and the Gas lamp District
hot spots.
Help the event organizers by entering
now to better prepare to offer sailors a
great event. Reserve dock space, hotels
rooms and Pre and Post after parties
reservations. Want to have Fun? Sail

Thursday, January
23rd, 2009
Newport Beach, CA
There’s a New Race in Town
There's a lot of buzz
around the Southern California racing scene
regarding a new race called The Border Run, to
be held on the same day and start from the same
port as the famous Newport to Ensenada Race on
April 24, 2009. Event organizers XS Racing are
promoting the contest as a challenging and fun
alternative to the famous, long running Newport
to Ensenada tradition.
"It seems that there are quite a few sailors out
there who, for one reason or another, are
looking for a good long-distance race without a
lot of the complications, expense and worry the
Ensenada Race carries," says Border Run Public
Relations Director Josh Richards. "The Newport
to Ensenada is a great tradition, but we thought
we'd provide an alternative."
Promoters are quick to point out that the race
makes for safe and easy travel for friends and
family and conveniently finishes in San Diego,
also known as “America’s Finest City”. In
addition to a healthy number of early entries,
including the 68-foot sled Cheetah, organizers
are pleased to have the prestigious San Diego
Yacht Club as the venue for the trophy
presentation party.
San Diego Yacht Club will host their annual
Leukemia Cup and Yachting Cup Regatta the
following weekend
With inclusion and ‘growing-the-sport’ as their
rallying concerns, the Border Run looks to
attract any and all classes providing they're
18-feet or larger. PHRF, IRC, AMERICAP, ULDB A,
ULDB B, XSRacing, One Design, Cruising Class boats, and Multihulls,
ORCA are all expected to be on the Newport
start-line.
Starting from Newport Beach at 11 a.m. (one hour
before the Ensenada start) sailors will sail
into Mexican waters to take the small Coronado
del Norte island to port and sail to the finish
just outside of San Diego Harbor - a 93 mile
International yacht race. For those who prefer
a shorter course, there is the option to choose
a more direct route to San Diego making for a
66-mile jaunt. Seatow is onboard as one of the
many sponsors and will follow the fleet offering
free towing during the race for sailors who
encounter problems.
In addition to insuring an interesting and
competitive race, coordinators are also devoting
ample attention to the pre and post party
festivities. The pre party on the 23rd of April
will be on Newport Bay with Seatow providing
shuttle service from yacht clubs to the party.
The after race party and prize-giving ceremony
will take place at SDYC.

Friday, January 15th, 2009
Newport Beach, CA
The Border Run
race
will be held on the same day and start
from the same port as the famous Newport
to Ensenada Race on April 24, 2009.
Being promoted as an alternative to the
Ensenada race it is really much more
than that.
The race has a European flare utilizing
sponsors to race for Cash Gift Cards and
prizes in addition to the more
traditional trophies. Starting with a
Send-Off party in Newport
Beach, there will be food, drink, and
live music on the evening of Thursday
the 23rd. Seatow, an official sponsor,
will provide shuttle service from yacht
clubs and boats to the party!
All boats 18 feet and larger are invited.
Classes include PHRF, XSRacing, One Design, ULDBs, IRC,
Orca, Multihull and Cruising along with anyone
who wants to experience an overnight
International yacht race but does not
want to hassle passports, customs and
long deliveries.
Additional advantages of the race include safe
and easy travel for visiting friends and family and last but
not least, in these uncertain economic times,
all the money spent in Newport and San Diego
helps to support the local US economies. |
 |
The Course- The Border Run will be a more
tactical race than most overnight races.
Starting from Newport Beach at 11 am (one hour
before the Ensenada start) sailors will race
into Mexican waters taking the small island of
Coronado del Norte to port and sail to the
finish line just outside San Diego Harbor...a 93
mile International Yacht Race! For those who
prefer a shorter course you have the option to
choose the more direct route to San Diego...a 66
mile race. Again, Seatow will follow the fleet
and offer ‘free towing’ during the race if
sailors encounter any problems along the way.
Event organizers intend to raise the bar from
other events with a fun event at the San Diego
Yacht Club after the
race on Saturday, April 25th. Live music, food
and drink will abound as sailors celebrate their
finish of a race that is sure to become a yearly
tradition. Open to all, the event
will
promote the sport of
sailing as much as celebrating the race.
The Border Race is the first of a series of
races that will be promoted during the
course of the year. Come join the fun and
be part of the Inaugural 2009 Border Run and
be a part of history. For more information call 800-366-8584.
