Border Run organizers announce agreement

Press Release, 6/14/10
–
NOSA (Newport Ocean Sailing Association), organizers of the
long-standing Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, and XS
Racing, founders of the Border Run International Sailing Event to
San Diego, are happy to announce they have reached an agreement for
the 2011 events
that will allow sailors to
participate in both events and eliminate several sources of local
controversy within the Southern California sailing community.
“I'm glad we all found a way to work together. We look forward to
working with NOSA and ORCA to help grow both races and the overall
participation of sailboat racing in Southern California again.”
said Randy Reynolds, designer/builder of the R33 catamaran and
co-founder of XS Racing and The Border Run.
Along with the help of South Shore Yacht Club (the Organizing
Authority of The Border Run) and ORCA (the Ocean Racing Catamaran
Association), all four parties have helped to create a set of
guidelines they feel will serve the greater good for the local
sailors.
“South Shore Yacht Club is glad to have been a
part of bringing the three parties together (NOSA, ORCA, and XS) to
help unify the local sailing community. We look forward in helping
promote both these great events in 2011” said Steve Ellsworth
Junior Staff Commodore
of SSYC.
The multihull
organization, ORCA, was instrumental in moving the process forward
by creating a new ‘Extreme’ class to once again include the Reynolds
33 catamaran to sail in the 2011 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race.
With this new agreement the two multihull fleets will be unified to
race in one fleet under two rating systems.
“The ORCA fleet looks forward to racing with the XS Racing fleet
under the two rating systems. This new agreement will get more
multihulls to the same starting line. I personally look forward to
racing in both the Newport to Ensenada Race and Border Run next
year!” said Bill Gibbs, ORCA president and owner/skipper of the
52 foot Bladerunner catamaran,
Afterburner.
Newport to Ensenada Race organizers
will award trophies for two multihull classes next year, similar to
how they recognize IRC or ORR boats that race within the PHRF
class. West coast multihull sailors can now join both XS and ORCA
to get two ratings and be scored under both systems, creating a
larger fleet of racers. NOSA was very active in making this happen.
“We are pleased we were able to work with ORCA and XS Racing to
reach common ground on the issue of eligibility of the R33 catamaran
to race in the Newport to Ensenada Race and look forward to seeing a
large fleet of multihulls hitting the starting lines in 2011.” said
Jim Jackman, Vice Commodore of NOSA.
As
a result of the new agreement and to allow sailors to participate in
both events, South Shore Yacht Club and XS Racing have set the start
of the 2011 Border Run International Sailing event on Saturday,
April 9, 2011, the weekend before the Newport to Ensenada start.
This will avoid an overlap with the 2011 Newport to Ensenada Yacht
Race, which will start on Friday, April 15th, 2011.
Said Bob Long co-founder of XS Racing and The Border Run, “Dennis
Conner was quoted in saying that he wished that the two races were
on separate weekends…”I want to race in both races.” With this new
agreement in place, sailors will now benefit from all the hard
effort of all involved and that we will see more sailors like Dennis
Conner race in both events. April 2011 will be a great month for
those who love the adventure, challenge and fun of coastal racing
and sailing.”

Thank you to
all of you sailors out there who have made the Border Run a great event. We
hope your journey down the coast created great memories and the party at the
Kona Kai was worth the voyage. We are already starting to plan The Border
Run 2011 so mark it on your calendar today. The 3rd Annual Border Run will
be even bigger and better than this year!
For those of you who want to capture the memories of the 2010 Border Run we
went to a lot of effort to capture the moment. We had Pat Reynolds follow
the sleds around the Coronado's in a small boat as Peter Howson stayed up
all night taking pictures of every boat that finished off the finish line
boat. And of course Fred and his gang were at the parties and on the water
taken pictures of everyone sailing in the 2nd annual Border Run. We hope
the effort will have captured your boat and crew sailing and having fun at
the 2010 Border Run. All photos are now posted at

speed records along the West Coast sailing Magnitude 80, has entered

sailing another turbo sled named Akela. Akela is the new scratch boat for
the course with a -129 rating. Baker's entry raises the big boat class to
eight sleds and raises the level of competition considerably.

It's ANARCHY on the
Border Run!
April 5th 2010 - The Border Run International
Sailing Event has been popping with news as of late. First, what was
formally the fastest design on the planet, the Hobie Trifoiler, entered in
the developmental class, then, seven sleds, some of the most prominent
racers on the West Coast, entered and now the Editor of the most influential
sailing website in the world has thrown his hat in the ring. Scot Tempesta
Owner/Editor in Chief of Sailing Anarchy will be sailing his Flying Tiger
10m, "Anarchy".
"Anarchy is looking forward to and participating in an alternative to the
Ensenada race," Tempesta said. "Whatever allure that race used to have has
dissipated and we are happy to support the Border Run event and look forward
to a good race. It said on the entry form that you are guaranteeing at least
10 knots of breeze, right?"
Border Run organizers were more than pleased to see the renowned and
sometimes controversial editor of
www.sailinganarchy.com enter the race. Tempetsa has almost
single-handedly grown the Flying Tiger fleet to the substantial numbers it
boasts today and has been a main proponent in maintaining the interest and
popularity of the sport of modern sailboat racing.

Sleds,
Hydrofoils and Charity Join 2010 Border Run

March 26 2010 - In only their second year, the
Border Run International Sailing Event appears to be the talk of the
Southern California racing scene with the recent announcement of seven
maxi-sleds entering the contest. These boats, considered the "rock
stars" of the So Cal scene, will be competing in a course that starts
April 24th off Newport Beach, rounds the Coronado del Norte Island and
finishes in San Diego. Grand Illusion, Holua, OEX, Condor, Cheetah,
Alchemy and Medicine Man have all signed up with possibly more to come
before race day. At the same time, two Hobie Trifoilers, once
considered the fastest design on the planet, will be competing in the
developmental class that the Border Run has created. In addition, the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has come aboard as the official charity of
the Border Run.
"Who says a lot can't happen in two weeks?" Border Run Co-founder Randy
Reynolds said of this influx of good news. "It's been really fun seeing
it all develop. Once we decided that we wanted to create an event where
everyone would be welcome, things just started to come together."
Reynolds, co-founder of Reynolds Design, is especially proud that both
the developmental class and Maxi class have come to the table. After
spending a lifetime creating and sailing boats that go fast, he is happy
to see both established designs and more unconventional boats taking
part in the event.
"In the 70’s you used to have regattas like the 'Yachting One of a Kind
Regatta' pitting one designs and one-off boats together, but today there
is no venue for designers to come out and compete in developmental boats
- with The Border Run, now there is."
Aside from the racing aspects, the Border Run organizers are also
pleased that the event has recently formed an association with the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In participating in the race, each sailor
has the opportunity to raise money for the charity and, in turn, be
eligible to earn their entry and win prizes, such as a chance to sail
with world-renowned sailor, ESPN commentator and National Regatta
chairman Gary Jobson in December.
"We're thrilled to be a part of The Border Run and to be working with XS
Racing and The South Shore Yacht Club," said Jenna Korb, Executive
Director of the San Diego / Hawaii Chapter. "Participating in this event
is a great way for boat enthusiasts to do what they love while also
helping the more than 894,000 people suffering from blood cancers who
need our help,"
The Border Run Sailing Event is presented by XS Racing with South Shore
Yacht Club of Newport Beach, Ca. beginning on Saturday, April 24th,
2010, the Border Run will start sailors of all skill levels from Newport
Beach, to the Coronado Islands and finish in San Diego to party at the
beautiful Kona Kai Resort set on San Diego Bay. For first timers and
smaller boats a 69 mile short course option allows a more direct route
to San Diego. For more information on the race and how to raise money

Newport Beach, CA 2/19/2010 - The Border Run International
Sailing Event was founded on the principles of including all who enjoy
the sport regardless of skill level or experience, but it's also a
competition created by sailors who have decades invested in the sport of
racing and love real and serious competition. While there will be
classes specially designed for sailors who are either not quite ready or
a bit intimidated by the fast paced, high-pressure atmosphere of a
competitive start, there will also be classes for the experienced,
competitive high-level racer. The latest entry, Yippee Kai Yay, a
powered-up Class 40 is a case in point. This hard-chined sleek racer
with a -15 rating represents the other side to The Border Run
personality - pure racing.
"We were happy to see Yippee Kai Yay sign
up," said Border Run organizer Bob Long. "It's the perfect boat for this
course. She's going to love this downwind run, but managing the Coronado
Islands should be a challenge as well."
In addition to Yippee Kai Yay, the entry list also shows a fleet of Farr
40’s and the Andrews 70, Condor. Condor is the second AA class boat
entered and organizers are looking forward to seeing a good sized fleet
of these "heavyweights" before the April 24 start.
In its sophomore year and still months away from the start date, the
event is already nearing 150 entries. Considered a ‘feeder’ race for
SDYC’s long running Yachting Cup, The Border Run will send sailors on
Saturday, April 24th, 2010 from Newport Beach, around Coronado del Norte
island and finish in San Diego to party at the Kona Kai Resort on the
tip of Shelter Island. For first timers and smaller boats a short course
option allows a more direct route to San Diego.

A
Better Day for the 2010 Border Run
Press Release: December 4th, 2009 – With
the inaugural race now in the books, XS Racing, organizers of the The
Border Run Yacht Race, were satisfied that the event surpassed
expectations for entries and overall interest. With over 100 racers on
the Newport line and a front page story in the Los Angeles Times, the
talk about the new race kept the internet forums and yacht club
conversations buzzing. Since then, XS has been busy making alterations
and modifications aimed at making the event more unique and attractive
to local racers.
With the 2010 event with 118 pre-entries to date, the 2010 Border Run is
about improvement for the sailors. With South Shore YC coming aboard to
help make the Border Run better, another prominent revision for next
year’s event will be a date change. The 2010 Border Run will now start
on Saturday, April 24th instead of Friday.
“The primary reason for the change was how the date affected the
long-term growth of the event. With the goal of making the race
accessible to as many participants as possible, the Saturday start makes
it much easier for the average racer to attend.” said XS event manager
Steve Byers. “We also considered crew availability with weekend crew
being easier to procure. In addition, for sailors coming from distant
harbors, slips and moorings will be very easy to attain. Lastly, a
Saturday start provides for a Friday night Send-off party allowing most
partygoers to enjoy the festivities on a work free night.”
The Border Run is the new exciting international sailing event that is
attracting both novice and expert sailors alike. The 2nd annual Border
Run will start and send hundreds of sailors from Newport Beach, around
Coronado del Norte Island in Mexican waters and finish in San Diego to
party at the beautiful Kona Kai on Shelter Island with no need for
passports or customs. For first timers and smaller boats a short course
option allows a more direct route to San Diego.
The Border Run also allows sailors to race to San Diego the week before
SDYC’s famous and long running Yachting Cup. With inclusion and
‘growing-the-sport’ as their rallying cry, The Border Run allows all
classes and sailors to participate from Sleds, Farr 40’s, and a variety
of racing and cruising monohulls and multihulls including a new Shadow
Boat class, soon to be announced.
As 2010 nears, with SSYC onboard and the new start date in place,
XSRACING.org is confident that the 2nd edition of The Border Run will be
an experience that will satisfy what sailors are looking for in a modern
event and will be one of the hottest races
of the year.
